More Than Just a Crop: Growing Possibility
(Originally published in the Western Nebraska Observer – October 2025)

At WeeShire Mains, we’ve always believed in growing more than just plants—we believe in growing possibility. Recently, the Western Nebraska Observer featured our expansion in an article titled “WeeShire Mains Expands Blueberry Dreams.”

The future is looking sweet! We are hard at work preparing the soil today so we can welcome you to a 900-bush U-Pick blueberry experience tomorrow.

The Science Behind the Berries Blueberries are a bit finicky, especially in Nebraska! The article highlights how we are using a $5,000 LB840 grant and USDA EQIP grants to prepare the land. We are currently mixing wood chips and peat moss to create the perfect acidic soil for our future bushes.

Setting the Record Straight on Planting While the news mentioned planting this fall, we are taking a more patient approach. We are doing the heavy prep work now so we can plant in the Spring of 2026. This gives our 900 planned bushes the best chance to root, thrive, and survive our local winters with the help of new low-tunnel technology.

The Vision: A U-Pick Experience Why 30 rows of blueberries? Because we want to create a "U-Pick" experience that is rooted in inclusion. We envision a space where families harvest fruit together, kids learn about agriculture, and everyone enjoys the sensory peace of the Shire.
